Bishop Byron Val Johnson, 82, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away on Friday, November 5, 2021 at his home.
Byron was born on January 22, 1939 to Val and Leah Johnson of Chicago, IL. In 1960, Byron met Anita Shelton. They went on to be married in 1963 and had two children, Byron (Keith) and Kimberly.
He graduated from Knox College in 1961 with a Bachelor’s degree in biology and chemistry, after which he was certified as a medical technologist. Later he attended McCormick Theological Seminary, earning two Master’s degrees while teaching computer programming. In 1972, he became an instructor at SIU where he also earned a PhD in Education, majoring in Instructional Materials.
He worked many years as a college professor and as the head of the electronic data processing department at SIU Carbondale while pastoring Apostolic Church of God in Harrisburg, IL. In 1990 he moved to Indianapolis, IN to become pastor of Christ Temple Apostolic Faith Assembly. In 1993, he was consecrated to the office of Suffragan Bishop. He was appointed the Diocesan Bishop of the Western Nigeria Diocese and founded New Wineskin Ministries in 2001.
He enjoyed spending time with his family. Reading was one of his pastimes, which included building an extensive library. He devoted much of his time and energy to traveling the world for different ministries and missions. Byron had a special love for Israel and led several excursions to the Holy Land.
Byron was preceded in death by his father, Val Johnson and his mother, Leah Johnson. He is survived by his wife; Anita Johnson, children; Byron (Jill) Johnson and Kimberly (Richard) Holland, grandchildren; Ashli (Kory) Parris, Krista (Oluwafemi) Awomoyi, Arron Holland, Kara (Daniel) Smith, and Evan Johnson, great grandchildren; Wyatt Parris, Zachary Awomoyi, and Jasper Parris, and siblings; Valerie Harrell, Yvette Cummings, Yvonne Jordan, and Felicia Carreker.
