CLAUDIUS GARLAND Obituary

Claudius A Garland Jr., 67, passed away January 6, 2021.  A memorial service has been scheduled for January 16, 2021 at Sprowl Funeral and Cremation Care from 5 pm until 7 pm.  Please continue to pray for the family during their loss.

Claudius “Little Brother” Augustus Garland Jr. was born to the Zoneice Zevonzelle (Crawford-Garland) Graham and Claudius Augustus Garland Sr. on November 20, 1953 in St. Louis, Missouri. Both parents preceded him in death.

The fourth of five children and the only boy, Claudius was lovingly called Little Brother by his older sisters Claudette Garland-Lands (John), Doris Downing (Steve), and younger sister Vivian Artis (Michael). His oldest sister, Regina Garland, preceded him in death as an infant.

Claudius and his siblings grew up in the 20 hundred block of Koehne Street. He attended School #44, Northwest High School. He loved the neighborhood he grew up in and cherished the lifelong friendships he made over the years.

In 1970, Claudius met Wanda Tharpe. They had 3 children together: Claudius Augustus Garland III, Regina Garland, and Raina Tharpe. With their union, he earned a bonus daughter Ronaye’ Tharpe (Wanda’s oldest child). In 1980, Claudius joined the United States Army where he served non-combat active duty until he was honorably discharged in 1983.

Claudius had a huge personality and never met a stranger. He had a unique laugh that could be identified wherever he went. Some of his hobbies included bowling, playing cards, playing the lottery, and as a young teen was the marble champion of the westside of Indianapolis.

Claudius made a huge impact in so many people’s lives and will be greatly missed by his siblings, children, grandchildren – Keenan (bonus grandson), Azia, Alyssia, Kyndall, and Kori – nieces Tiffany, Meskhenet (Jenna), Avian (Amin) and nephews Chaka, Piankhi (Dionne), Stephen Jr. (Tanya), Osiris (Kia), Michael Jr. - and a host of great nieces and nephews, friends, and acquaintances.
