John Cedric Smith III was born March 12, 1971, to the late Deacon John C. Smith Jr. and Missionary Sandra Pearl Smith. He was the fourth child of six and the family's foundation was rooted in The Church of God in Christ. Through this strong upbringing, he knew and had a personal relationship with God.

Affectionately known as Cedric, he attended Warren Township schools, where he displayed diligence and perseverance as a student athlete in football and received his high school diploma in 1989. One of the happiest moments of Cedric's life occurred after he enlisted in the United States Army Reserves. For many years, Cedric showcased his love of music performing in various venues around the city as the lead singer of "The Upsetters."  You were sure to hear his playlist when he was around.  Always lively and full of humor, he kept us all entertained.  He also enjoyed being a great debater and would astound you with his depth of knowledge.

Cedric married Nicole Webster, on July 28, 1998.  To the union, two sons and a daughter were added to the Smith legacy.  Upon his sons receiving several accolades academically, being involved in sports and the arts, Cedric was a proud and passionate father.  He was here to celebrate his namesake receive a master's degree and also beamed as he helped move Jake into the University of Southern Indiana.  His children made his heart full and he loved sharing their success stories.
