Lula M. Nelson, age 86, peacefully passed away on June 21, 2026. A loving mother and a cherished presence in the lives of many, Lula will be remembered for her gentle spirit, unwavering love, and the countless lives she touched through her kindness and compassion. Her memory will remain a source of comfort and inspiration to all who knew her.

Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance at Sprowl Funeral & Cremation Care. A visitation will be held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at 12:00 p.m.

Lula Mae Nelson was born on July 8, 1939, in Russell County, Alabama, to the late Rena Mae Nelson and Willie Andrew Nelson.

In 1958, Lula moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, where she would go on to build a life filled with love, family, faith, and hard work.

In May of 1960, she married Elroy Johnson. Together they were blessed with six children. Lula worked at the Indianapolis Star and News, retiring after 40 years. She was a woman of many sacrifices; she enjoyed worshipping God and was a lifelong member of Family Bible Baptist Church.

Lula departed this life on Sunday, June 21, 2026, at the age of 86 years old.

Lula was preceded in death by her mother, Rena Mae Nelson; father, Willie Andrew Nelson; brothers Johnny Lee Nelson and Curtis Miles; sister Mary Virginia (Gent) Miles; son Jeffery Johnson; and ex-husband Elroy Johnson.

Lula leaves behind to cherish her memories Ilene Johnson Walker (Charles), Elroy Johnson, Jr.. Barbara Jean Johnson, Eric Johnson (Caryn), Olieta Johnson, Quinton Parks, stepdaughter Patricia Johnson, brother Ernest Lee Nelson, sister Rena Bell Nelson (Frank), and a host of grandchildern, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great neices, great nephews, and many freinds.
